What is 201 grade Stainless Steel

201 Stainless Steel is a popular grade of stainless steel that has unique mechanical properties. It is often used in manufacturing and industrial applications where strength, corrosion resistance, durability, and formability are important.

Stainless steel, nickel and new special alloys are considered to be one of the most advanced metal materials at present.

Type 201 stainless steel is a mid-range product with many useful qualities. While it is well suited for some applications, it is not a good choice for structures susceptible to corrosive influences such as salt water.

Type 201 belongs to the 200 series of austenitic stainless steels. Originally developed to save nickel, this series of stainless steels is characterised by its low nickel content.

Type 201 can be used as a replacement for Type 301 in many applications, but its corrosion resistance is inferior to that of its counterparts, especially in chemical environments.

Type 201 is non-magnetic after annealing, but becomes magnetic after cold working. Type 201 has a higher nitrogen content than 301 steel and has higher yield strength and toughness, especially at low temperatures.
Type 201 is unhardened by heat treatment and annealed at 1850-1950 degrees F (1010-1066 degrees C), followed by water quenching or rapid air cooling.

Type 201 is used in the manufacture of a variety of household appliances, including sinks, cookers, washing machines, doors and windows. It is also used in automotive trim, decorative construction, train cars, trailers and fixtures. It is not recommended for outdoor structural applications because of its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion.
