Painted Carbon Steel Footbridge Project
In October 2023, our partner Fabtech was commissioned by Equinor to build a footbridge to replace the existing footbridge at the Mongstad plant. The existing footbridge was constructed using painted carbon steel.
We wanted to challenge the existing solution and replace the carbon steel with Lean Duplex, a more sustainable and durable solution. The use of Lean Duplex allowed for a lighter structure, less maintenance, and reduced CO2 emissions.

Structural hollow sections manufactured by Stalatube
The transition from carbon steel to Lean Duplex is a reality with the great assistance of our metallurgical technical team and material supply. The selected material grade is lean duplex steel according to EN 1.4362 / UNS S32304 in accordance with NORSOK M:120 - MDS YD37.
416 stainless steel material properties
In addition to steel plates and hot rolled angles, we supply over 2000 meters of structural hollow sections. All products are manufactured from lean duplex steel and shipped from our plant in Kløfta, Norway.

Advantages of Lean Duplex:
 High strength
 Good corrosion resistance
 More predictable price levels
 Good fatigue strength
 Over 30% weight savings in most applications
 Low life cycle costs as no periodic painting is required
100% recyclable and made from over 85% recycled materials
Although the bridges were completed in 2022, installation was not completed until June 2023 due to poor weather conditions.
