Case Study of Hydrogen Embrittlement

2024,04,06
Hydraulic products generally need to work under high pressure, some parts are subjected to large forces, when the parts absorb hydrogen, fracture will occur in their weak places, such as the spool shown in Figure 1.

Spool internal hollow, due to functional requirements, the hollow needs to be sealed with the check valve with the spool in high-pressure work, which requires a strong impact resistance and toughness with the check valve with the place, and in order to achieve a certain degree of wear-resistant requirements, many manufacturers choose this kind of spool surface chrome plating, and the requirements of the plating is thicker, but due to the chrome-plating process itself is inefficient, so the need for plating time is long! However, due to the low current efficiency of the chrome plating process itself, the plating time is longer, and the hydrogen penetration is serious.

The spool material is 42CrMo, hardness after tempering treatment is 32~36HRC, after assembly requires chrome plating thickness of 0.04~0.06mm. spool for hydraulic excavators, rated working pressure of 31.3MPa, and due to the characteristics of the excavator, the peak impact pressure can reach more than 60MPa, the spool plating did not go to hydrogen embrittlement treatment, so the use of the excavator on the After a period of time, fracture occurred, as shown in Figure 2.

After the fracture, the spool was analyzed physically and chemically, and the measured hardness of the spool heart was 34.5 HRC, and the metallographic analysis was done on the cross-section of the spool before plating and after plating, as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, respectively. It can be seen through the crystallographic figure 4, after plating the core crystallographic figure appears obvious along the crystal fracture characteristics - icing sugar-like fracture.
